Kaki Pass Rays and Reef Life (Hao)

18° 3.9′ S · 141° 0.4′ W · approximate

The outer mouth of Kaki Pass is thick with reef fish, with eagle rays and, often, mantas riding the current. You can see it on a guided pass dive near slack.

Practical

Duplicat (June 2017) dived from a local pearl-farm buoy just west of the pass mouth (two buoys; use the westernmost) and saw 'absolutely loads of fish' and eagle rays, noting that mantas are often seen. The Soggy Paws dive table rates Hao for pass dives. The cruiser sources we found do not describe the pass's shark life, so no shark claims are made here. Go only near slack with local knowledge: the ebb runs 6-8 kt, and Noonsite quotes Sailing Directions at up to 12 kt. Position approximate: just inside the pass mouth, from the pass waypoint 18°03.90S / 141°00.31W.
