Kaki Pass Point and Old Shooting Range (Hao)

18° 4.1′ S · 140° 59.9′ W · approximate

A low point just east of Kaki Pass with the old military shooting range. You reach it by dinghy from the near-pass anchorage, and from the shore you can watch the pass run before you commit to it.

Practical

The compendium says there is a very shallow dinghy landing pier from the anchorage just inside the lagoon east of the pass, giving access to 'the point and old shooting range'. Land near high water or wade. Watching the standing waves from the point is a good way to judge slack before going out. Stay out of the water near the pass mouth: the ebb can run 6-8 kt, and Noonsite quotes Sailing Directions at up to 12 kt. Position approximate: on the rim about 400 m N of the near-pass anchorage waypoint (18°04.31S / 140°59.75W).
