Hao Airport Anchorage

18° 3.9′ S · 140° 58.2′ W

A deep anchorage tucked close under the north rim near the airport runway. It is the place to hide in Hao when a front swings the wind into the northwest.

Practical

Jacaranda (Jan 2019) anchored at 18°03.889S / 140°58.242W to shelter from a 25-35 kt NW breeze, very close to shore. Depth about 60 ft, many bommies and the bottom not visible; they found sand between two bommies by luck and put 4 floats on the chain. Gusts to 40 kt and the anchor held; it was lumpy for an hour when squalls swept SW wind by. Good light and floats are essential. Not a trade-wind anchorage.
