Hakahetau Bay (Ua Pou)

9° 21.4′ S · 140° 6.3′ W · approximate

A roomy open bay off Hakahetau village on Ua Pou's NW coast, with the spires rising behind. It is the base for Manfred's chocolate, the waterfall and the Poumaka hike, and for Ti'Piero's dinners.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: estimated off the village from the OpenStreetMap position of Hakahetau village and svJenny's posting position (09°21'S / 140°06'W, May 2015). Check depth before dropping; no published anchoring waypoint was found. Migration (Mar 2024): lots of room, but conditions change a great deal with small shifts in swell direction. If it gets rolly, move to Vaiehu a few miles south. Rhapsody (June 2022): a little rolly, room for plenty of boats. svJenny (2015): reasonable, with a small swell. More than 30 boats anchored here during the 2019 festival. Dinghy: the concrete pier has a long ladder. The local boats all have stern lines out to buoys, so go around every line before cutting in. Rhapsody (2022) found it surgy and used a stern anchor on the dinghy (Sierra Wind 2022). Migration (2024): a section of the quay stays wet from waves and is very slippery. Fresh water at the dock, potability unknown (2022). Garbage and recycling behind the yellow building near the quay. A small store is up the road from the quay, across the river. Vini 4G was good in 2024, spotty in 2022. Snorkelling: clear water and colourful fish on the eastern side of the bay (Rhapsody 2022).
