Manfred the Chocolate Maker (Hakahetau)

9° 22.5′ S · 140° 5.3′ W

Manfred Drechsler and his wife Thérèse grow their own cacao up the Hakahetau valley and make dark chocolate there (sold as 'Bisou des Marquises'). The walk up is easy and beautiful, and you can swim at the valley waterfall on the way back.

Practical

Coordinate from OpenStreetMap (Manfred chocolat). Route (Migration, Jan 2023): from the quay walk straight up the road and turn left just before the bridge to the magasin. After 50 m, where the road meets the mountain, turn right; it is about 2 miles up a dirt road with lots of signs. Trance (2021): turn left at the post office, then right onto the dirt road after about 150 yards. You can also drive. Price: 500 XPF a bar (2023, verify locally), in many flavours made from local produce. The waterfall (cascade) is signposted off the same road. Bring swim gear. Manfred's workshop is private and the chocolate is sold from the house.
