Amanu North Anchorage
17° 43.7′ S · 140° 39.1′ W
Amanu's quiet NE corner: flat in N-NE winds, with reef walks, octopus, crab and lobster hunting, and a few weekend copra camps.
Practical
Sugar Shack (Nov 2021): 17°43.674S / 140°39.090W in 5.5 m sand next to a few large, easily spotted bommies, with no floats needed; perfect in NE winds, with no fetch or roll. Grace of Longstone (Jan 2021): 17°43.60S / 140°39.09W, flat in N-NE. Jacaranda spent 3 weeks here and the anchor held in gusts to 40 kt. When squalls swing the wind W-WNW there is some bounce over the 2-mile fetch. Duplicat also stopped off the abandoned village at 17°42.819S / 140°39.760W (good holding among bommies), and notes many secure sand anchorages along the northern edge.
