Amanu South and Southeast Anchorage

17° 52.8′ S · 140° 47.2′ W

Good sand and scattered, easily seen bommies on Amanu's south-eastern shore. Several crews found it calmer than the village anchorage in easterlies.

Practical

Duplicat (June 2017): 17°52.807S / 140°47.198W, good holding in sand for any wind with east in it. Grace of Longstone (Jan 2021) used 17°52.79S / 140°47.18W, with a small reef to the north blocking the swell that rolls down the atoll; friends anchored 2-3 miles farther north to kite. Sugar Shack (Dec 2020) found 3-5 m sand at 17°52.761S / 140°47.060W with 2 pearl floats, and got a slight wrap round the reef in an 088°T wind. Hoodoo (June 2020) used 17°52.863S / 140°47.264W in 10-20 ft. 'You can anchor almost anywhere on this side of Amanu.' Rats ashore if you barbecue. Kitesurfing nearby.
