Point Koutu Korigo Anchorage (Amanu)

17° 51.4′ S · 140° 50.9′ W

'Horseshoe Reef', the usual anchorage just south of Ikitake village, tucked behind a reef that juts about 300 m into the lagoon. It is close to town but strewn with tower-like bommies.

Practical

Grace of Longstone (Jan 2021): 17°51.37S / 140°50.92W, in 8-17 m behind the reef with sand patches and good holding, but they needed help to free a snagged anchor and helped two other boats with the same problem, so use a trip line and floats. Sugar Shack (Nov 2020) took three tries to set at 17°51.436S / 140°51.004W in 14 m. Luci Para 2 (2020) found it too deep and coral-filled to float the chain effectively, and went farther south to a 7-8 m patch east of a very shallow (1 m) area off a motu, well protected from NW to NE. Older note (2010): 'Do not attempt to anchor here in bad light.' The bay is excellent in N-W winds and moderate in E-S, and completely exposed to the SE across a 5-mile fetch. To town: a 1.5 nm dinghy ride around the reef, wet in wind. Or land on the big sand pile at the south end of the village motu and walk about 10-15 minutes. Coastal Drifter (Jan 2019) logged 17°51.385S / 140°50.978W in 12 m here (compendium).
