West End Moorings (Roatán Marine Park)

16° 17.9′ N · 86° 35.8′ W · approximate

The Roatán Marine Park mooring field off West End village and Half Moon Bay — clear water over sand and grass, the reef 200 yards off and a lively beach town of dive shops and bars ashore.

Practical

Anchoring is prohibited in the Bay Islands National Marine Park here (Sandy Bay, West End, Half Moon Bay, West Bay): use an RMP mooring. Fees per Noonsite (2024) and RMP's mooring page: US$10/day, $50/week, $150/month; register and pay at the RMP office in Half Moon Bay (Mon-Sat 9:00 am-5:00 pm), by PayPal, or to the ranger. RMP lists about 25 balls — contact them for availability. Moorings are two 6 ft sand screws with chain; cruisers have found tackle old — dive your mooring and add a backup line to the screws. Entrance: pass the stake near 16°17.67'N 86°36.09'W about 10 m to port heading east; minimum about 2.5-2.6 m and big coral heads ~20 m right of the stake; the entrance gets rough in NW swell. Badly exposed to NW and N winds — leave for French Cay Harbour before a norther. Thefts: two dinghies stolen in one night in March 2023 — lock and lift. Coordinate is approximate (derived from the OSM shoreline at West End and the OCC entrance stake).

Best for
