Blue Channel Snorkel (West End, Roatán)

16° 18.0′ N · 86° 36.0′ W

Follow the channel towards shore and it shallows into a sand bowl about 4 m deep, with upside-down jellyfish, lettuce sea slugs and sometimes a huge school of big-eye scad. It's one of the few West End sites as good from the surface as on scuba.

Practical

The coordinate is from PADI's site page, which lists the shallow end at about 15 ft (4 m). The channel walls are riddled with swim-throughs for divers (see the Blue Channel dive entry). Snorkel it on calm days with a boat or from the West End moorings by dinghy, and watch for dive-boat traffic in the channel. Roatán Marine Park rules apply: no touching, standing on coral or taking.

Shallow snorkel close to the West End moorings
