The Plane (Convair CV-440 wreck, South Caicos)

21° 28.1′ N · 71° 31.8′ W · approximate

The scattered remains of a twin-engine Convair CV-440 that crashed in 1978, lying on the reef top at the edge of the South Caicos wall, with a big nurse shark often resting under what's left of the wing.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: plotted on the south-coast wall off Cockburn Harbour (Visit TCI says most South Caicos sites are 10–15 minutes by boat on the east and southeast faces of Long Cay and South Caicos); the operator knows the mooring. Visit TCI: about 55 ft (16 m), one of the few recreational-depth wrecks in the country; Hurricane Irma swept the wings over the wall, leaving a fuselage section and debris. Divernet (Dec 2025) still describes a wing and landing gear, with a large nurse shark often underneath, and repeats the local story linking the plane to Pablo Escobar's smuggling era. A 2001 diver report (Undercurrent, published 2022) used it as a 45–55 ft check-out dive. Inside the Admiral Cockburn Land & Sea National Park: no fishing, no take, sand-only anchoring. Only operator: Adventures by Salterra.
