Samaná Bay Humpback Whale Watching
19° 13.8′ N · 69° 12.0′ W · approximate
Every winter North Atlantic humpbacks gather off the mouth of Samaná Bay and the offshore Silver Bank (Banco de la Plata) to mate and calve. It is one of the great whale shows on earth, often visible from your own deck as you come and go.
Practical
Position approx: a point at the mouth of Samaná Bay, not a surveyed spot. Season mid-January to March (GoDominicanRepublic; the Virgintino guide says December to March). The area is part of the DR's Bancos de la Plata y La Navidad Marine Mammal Sanctuary, and strict responsible-observation protocols apply; as good practice slow down, keep your distance, never chase or cut off whales, and let them approach you. Commercial tours run from Samaná's town dock; Puerto Bahía Marina puts the whale-watching area about 7 nm away. From a yacht, heave to or drift with the engine off and watch.
