Oil Slick Leap (Dive Site)

12° 12.0′ N · 68° 18.5′ W

A wall dive north of Kralendijk where you giant-stride off a low cliff (or climb down a steel ladder) straight into blue water; big barracuda schools patrol the reef. The name comes from a never-built oil terminal planned for the site.

Practical

Depth roughly 3-24 m on the reef, deeper beyond (bonaire.com); tourism board gives 20-80 ft. Entry by steel ladder into about 4.5-6 m, or a 1.5-3 m jump from the platform depending on tide; bottom rungs are sometimes missing after storms, so exits at low tide can be awkward. Current minimal, usually parallel to shore; north swells can surge. Parking on a sand strip for about 8-10 cars beside the road; salt trucks pass. Good night dive (start within an hour after sunset). Wildlife: barracuda, tarpon, angelfish, frogfish, seahorses near the coral nursery. Shore dive: no yacht anchoring anywhere in the Marine Park. From a yacht, come by dinghy and tie to the yellow STINAPA public mooring (2 consecutive hours max, boats up to 13 m, moor by the bow; STINAPA), or drive. Nature fee required (US$40 per calendar year per bonaire.com); no gloves, no touching or feeding, reef-safe sunscreen; an orientation dive is mandatory on arrival and an SMB is recommended (STINAPA). Check STINAPA's SCTLD stoplight map before diving and move from green to yellow to red sites, never the reverse. Coordinate: OpenStreetMap dive-site marker at the shore entry.
