Klein Bonaire

12° 9.5′ N · 68° 18.6′ W

A pancake-flat, uninhabited 6 km2 islet 800 m off Kralendijk, ringed by fringing reef and sugar-white beaches - bought back from developers in 1999 and now wholly part of the marine park, with green and hawksbill turtles nesting on its shores.

Practical

No anchoring; reach it by your own dinghy (long, open-water crossing in the trades - take a reliable outboard), by kayak, or by the water taxis from Karel's Beach Bar. Use the yellow public moorings for a maximum of 2 hours (one boat over 4 m or three under 4 m per buoy). Numbered yellow rocks on shore mark low points to cross the reef; the current typically runs right to left as you face the sea from the rocks (Wikipedia). No water, shade structures or sanitation beyond a small open shelter - pack everything out. Wikipedia notes it is closed to visitors in the afternoon; turtle nesting beaches must be left undisturbed. Nature tag required.

Best for

A day of beach, snorkelling and turtle-spotting
