Hurricane Season (DR & Puerto Rico)
18° 30.0′ N · 67° 53.0′ W · approximate
June through November the whole region sits in the Atlantic hurricane belt. Plan around it, and know your hurricane hole before August.
Practical
Pinned at the Mona Passage between the two islands as a regional marker. NOAA NHC: the Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30. The 1991–2020 average season brings 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes; the first hurricane typically forms in early to mid August and the first major hurricane in late August or early September. Traditional refuges named in the sources here: Luperón harbor (DR north coast); Cap Cana's inland marina basin; the Río Cumayasa (historically); the mangroves of Bahía de Jobos west of Cayo Puerca and Marina de Salinas's mangrove barrier (PR south coast); La Parguera's mangrove canals (local boats); and Boquerón's SE mangrove backwater. Some cruisers store boats in Puerto Rico for the season (Virgintino); check your insurer's named-storm and latitude rules first.
