HMS Endymion wreck (Endymion Rock)

21° 6.9′ N · 71° 15.0′ W · approximate

The country's most famous wreck dive: the 44-gun British frigate Endymion, lost on a reef south of Salt Cay in 1790, with anchors, chain and cannon scattered at up to 40 ft, and the 1921 schooner General Pershing on the same rock.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: derived from Visit TCI's '13 miles south of Salt Cay' — plot Endymion Rock from your chart and go only in calm weather with a local operator. Protected historical site: removing or damaging anything is illegal. Dives are custom trips (e.g., Salt Cay Divers). Wikipedia: she struck an uncharted rock on 22 August 1790 and sank the next day; the ledge surveyed afterwards, about 200 by 100 yards, had its highest point only about 4.3 ft below the surface, so it's a hazard to yachts as well as a dive site. Visit TCI puts the site about 13 miles south of Salt Cay; a 2003 diver report says 10–12 miles, with anchors, cannon and chain on healthy coral and a second, later wreck nearby. See the passage entry 'Salt Cay to Endymion Rock' for access.
