Humpback whale watching at Salt Cay (Jan–Apr)

21° 19.8′ N · 71° 13.8′ W · approximate

From January to April Salt Cay is 'whale HQ': humpbacks bound for the Mouchoir and Silver Banks pass close along its west coast in the Turks Island Passage, and Salt Cay Divers runs whale-watching and, conditions allowing, in-water snorkel encounters.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: just off the west-coast anchorage near Deane's Dock. Visit TCI: tours run January–April, sightings frequent but not guaranteed; Diveworldwide calls January–March the peak; DAN (2023) says late January to early April. Operators: Salt Cay Divers (Salt Cay) and Crystal Seas Adventures (Grand Turk). In the water: wear a snorkel vest, don't splash, never approach, chase, freedive at or touch a whale, keep clear of mothers, and get out if an animal charges. Under way, the Department of Environment & Maritime Affairs guidance (via thesandstc.com, updated 2024) is to approach slowly and quietly, move parallel rather than head-on, never box whales between boats or against shallows, and back off if they change direction 3–5 times. No numeric minimum distance was found. Keep a lookout and slow down at night in the passage.
