Gunboat Island Anchorage

9° 29.2′ N · 78° 52.7′ W · approximate

A small, picturesque islet in the inshore cays between Carti and the Naguarandup Cays, with a few Guna buildings ashore; a pretty lunch or overnight stop in settled weather.

Practical

Coordinate approximate and derived: about 90 m SW of the Gunboat Island outline in OpenStreetMap (node 13660461729 and its coastline), checked to be in open water about 110 m off the islet. Noonsite's 2018 fee list: $20 anchoring plus $2 per person to visit, and the reef does not give enough protection in the winter trade winds (verify fees locally); Spirit of Argo also noted a $20 anchoring fee at Gunboat Cay in 2016. Mailasail s/v Angel (2010) stopped here on the way to clear in at Porvenir and speculated that the name recalls the US role in defusing the 1925 Guna revolution (unverified). Use it in light or settled conditions and move to the Naguarandup Cays or Carti in fresh trades.

Best for

A settled-weather stop between Carti and the eastern cays

Season
