Green Island Outer Reef Snorkel

9° 29.0′ N · 78° 38.5′ W · approximate

The outlying reef around Green Island, reached through a clear break in the reef west of the island, with starfish and small fish in the shallows and stingrays over the sand.

Practical

Coordinate approximate and derived: about 200 m off the west side of the Green Island outline in OpenStreetMap (way 12421982), the side where Spirit of Argo found the clear break giving access around the reef (2016). Spirit of Argo rated the outlying reef good; SY Balvenie (2012) found the water murky and hot near the anchorage and saw many large stingrays, so visibility varies. Best at midday in calm, sunny weather. A saltwater crocodile has been reported living on Green Island in the past (SY Vindomar 2008); be cautious near the mangrove edges.

Best for

Reef snorkelling from the quiet Green Island anchorage
