Chalk Sound National Park

21° 45.9′ N · 72° 17.7′ W

A nearly landlocked lagoon of electric-turquoise water studded with hundreds of tiny limestone islets, right behind the Sapodilla Bay anchorage — one of the most photographed colours in the Caribbean.

Practical

Too shallow for yachts (mostly under 5 ft) and connected to the bank only by a winding channel: explore by kayak or paddleboard. Las Brisas restaurant on the lagoon rents kayaks and runs a sightseeing boat. Rock iguanas live on the vegetated islets — feeding or touching them is illegal. Coral sumac (poisonwood) grows along the shore; don't touch it. Bonefish, barracuda, rays and small lemon sharks are seen. There are few public overlooks or launch points.
