Hurricane season & winter fronts (TCI)
21° 46.6′ N · 72° 15.7′ W · approximate
The Turks & Caicos sit in the hurricane belt from June 1 to November 30, peaking in August–September; in winter, occasional fronts interrupt the 12–18-knot ESE trades.
Practical
Pinned at Providenciales (Wikipedia island position); applies countrywide. Recent hits and near misses: Irma and Maria (Sept 2017, severe damage on South Caicos, Grand Turk and Salt Cay), Fiona (Sept 2022), Oscar (Oct 2024, near Grand Turk and Ambergris), Erin (Aug 2025, minor) and Melissa (passed west, Oct 29, 2025). Shelter is scarce: North Creek on Grand Turk (shoal draft, hard entry) and the Provo marinas are the main options — most cruisers leave the islands for the season. Winter fronts can bring calms or N–NW winds (a 2014 cruiser had NW 7–10 knots all the way from the Bahamas), which make the west-facing anchorages (Grand Turk, Salt Cay, West Caicos, Malcolm's Road) uncomfortable and can close the north-shore reef cuts. Best season Nov–May (noforeignland).
