Blue Creek Anchorage (Turneffe)

17° 12.1′ N · 87° 56.1′ W

A lee-side anchorage on Turneffe's southwest shore by Blue Creek, the tidal pass that splits the mangroves behind the western reef, with snorkelling and dive buoys a short dinghy ride away.

Practical

Position is the anchor spot reported by the captain of M/Y Suakin (2.41 m draft, March/April 2008): 17°12.14'N 87°56.11'W in about 7 m on a patch of seagrass, north of the SW tip. With SE wind at about 10 knots he found the SW tip itself too rolly - swell steepened in the shallows - and moved north to here. A marked channel enters the atoll at Blue Creek; snorkelling in about 5 m on a line from the anchorage toward the Turneffe light; two dive buoys near the reef edge (Ventura Yacht Agency). Entrances on the southwest side are shallow at the mouth. TASA's map shows a Blue Creek field station. Exposed in westerlies and northers.

Best for

Overnight on the atoll's sheltered west side near the southern dive sites
