Wildlife· Crooked Island· Bahamas — Eleuthera, Andros & the Out Islands

Turtle Sound

22° 47.1′ N · 74° 16.8′ W · approximate

Often called Crooked Island's inland river: a mangrove-lined sound of blue-green water that winds about nine miles from the eastern end of the French Wells channel to behind Moss Town and Seaview, full of turtles, fish and wading birds and popular with fly fishermen.

Practical

Position from the Bahamas tourism board listing (its sign-corrected value; the sound is long, so treat as approximate). Accessible by dinghy or kayak from French Wells on a rising tide, or by road from Moss Town; Crooked Island Lodge can arrange trips. Very shallow and tidal: plan to return before the ebb strands you. Bring bug spray.

Best for

Kayak or dinghy exploration and bonefishing in the mangroves
