Poseidon Point reef snorkel (Burnt Ground)

23° 38.3′ N · 75° 16.8′ W

The best shore snorkel at the north end: smooth rock ledges full of small life, then a drop-off about 100 ft out falling 30 to 50 ft where barracuda, tarpon and bigger fish cruise, all behind an extensive offshore reef.

Practical

Position is the OpenStreetMap 'Poseidon beach' attraction node. Directions (Beaches of Long Island, 2018): heading north past Stella Maris into Burnt Ground, about 1,000 ft past Pratt's store the road dog-legs right; take the immediate right-hand road, follow the sharp right then sharp left bends and drive about a mile to the beach. The sand does not reach the water, so cross the rock ledges carefully. With an offshore wind you can enter at either end and drift along the drop-off with the wind and tide. My Out Islands notes big tarpon swimming through the reef; Stella Maris lists Poseidon's Point among its snorkel highlights. Atlantic side: go only on calm days, never alone.
