Coral Gardens (Stella Maris shore snorkel)
23° 36.2′ N · 75° 16.3′ W
A shore snorkel on Long Island's Atlantic side north of Stella Maris, with valleys, caves and overhangs in the reef and a good chance of hawksbill turtles.
Practical
Position is the OpenStreetMap 'Coral Gardens' attraction node. My Out Islands describes 'breathtaking valleys, caves and overhangs' and hawksbill turtles; Stella Maris Resort lists Coral Gardens among its nearby snorkel highlights and runs complimentary morning and afternoon shore outings for its guests (gear rental $6 per day plus 10% VAT on the resort page; verify locally). The Beaches of Long Island guide (2018): turn at the Stella Maris airport sign, go straight to the shore road and turn left, following the signs; the public path is well marked, but getting in and out over the rocks can be awkward, so wear reef shoes. Atlantic side: snorkel only in calm conditions with light westerly or southerly winds, and watch for current. Reach it by car or bike from Stella Maris Marina.
