Man of War Bay North Anchorage (Great Inagua)
21° 5.2′ N · 73° 39.0′ W
The best all-round trade-wind anchorage on Great Inagua: a clear sandy bay north of the Morton salt pier, flat and quiet when Matthew Town is rolling, with reef snorkelling from the boat.
Practical
Waterway Guide 21°05.210'N 73°38.970'W, 13 ft; anchor with protection from easterlies north of the salt pier in front of the church ruins. Noonsite waypoint 21°05.58'N 73°39.20'W in about 10 ft off the beach between two coral patches partly exposed at low water. Good sand holding but you must get close to shore - the bay is deep and the sounder will not register until you are near the beach; avoid coral heads (one crew wrapped a rode). Wide open from the west, and noforeignland users report it can be entered at night with accurate navigation. Calm even in 25+ kt NE when tucked in; swell can wrap round the north point in SE winds. No-see-ums at dawn. No services ashore. Open NW through SW.
Best for
Comfortable nights in the trades after clearing in
Season
NE–SE trades; leave before a frontal westerly
