Little Harbour Anchorage (Long Island east side)

22° 58.8′ N · 74° 51.2′ W

A small, reef-guarded natural harbour on the Atlantic coast south of Clarence Town, with a sandy beach and crystal-clear water. One of only two places to tuck in on the east side.

Practical

ActiveCaptain: eyeball navigation with no nav aids; boats to 90 ft have entered. One crew entered on a heading of 290° magnetic keeping Harbour Rock about 400 ft to starboard. Enter on a rising tide near high slack in daylight; with a 3-4 ft easterly swell behind, waves double in size at the entrance (a 44-ft catamaran was spun 60°). Anchor at the south end in deep sand (dive the anchor: thin sand in the north, tree trunks and a fish trap in the south). Very good holding, rode out 25 kt with 45-kt squalls; some roll from the entrance, so use a bridle. Weak Batelco signal toward Clarence Town. Beach access only; mosquitoes. In NE to SE swell you may be trapped for days until it drops.

Best for

A wild, settled-weather Atlantic anchorage

Season

Settled weather only; avoid in NE–SE swell
