Lochabar Point beach and blue hole (Clarence Town)
23° 5.4′ N · 74° 56.9′ W
A pink-tinged sand beach just south of Clarence Town, tucked behind the cays that guard the harbour, with a deep blue hole sitting right at the water's edge off its southern stretch. Caribbean Journal calls it Lochabar Beach, 'but it's really Blue Hole Beach'.
Practical
Position is the centroid of the OpenStreetMap sand-beach way at Lochabar Point, south-east of Harbour Breeze Villas. The Beaches of Long Island guide (2018) says the beach behind the harbour cays behaves like a calm Caribbean-side beach: about 2,100 ft from the villa access to the point, then an 1,100 ft blue-hole section south of the point. Access by road: heading south from Clarence Town, take the nondescript paved road at right angles to the Queen's Highway just south of the second pond on the right; it ends at a turnaround next to the blue hole, or turn in at the Harbour Breeze Villas sign. A rental-house listing says three cays between the bay and the Atlantic keep the water calm with a gently sloping bottom. The guide's authors had not snorkelled it but report the blue-hole part is good for snorkelling; the edge of the hole drops off suddenly, so keep non-swimmers well back. From the Clarence Town anchorage it is a long dinghy ride over shoal water; most cruisers come by car or bike.
