Clarence Town East Anchorage (Strachan Cay / Sandy Point)

23° 6.3′ N · 74° 56.8′ W

A tuck behind Strachan Cay and Sandy Point at the east side of Clarence Town harbour, much better than the main anchorage in winds from the north-west through north-east.

Practical

ActiveCaptain: great holding in sand at 12-20 ft, strong current (a stern anchor stops the swinging); a 2025 reviewer warns that right under the marker the bottom is hard rock and coral heads, and found excellent holding just north of it in 6-7 ft of sand and grass, but a relentless roll from the south-east. noforeignland rates 'Clarence Town East' 3.9: strong holding in sand at 8-10 ft, rolly in some winds, easy customs check-in, sharks reported. HAZARD: at least three cables lie on the sea floor running east-west just south of Sandy Point, in the deepest part of the hole where you would hide from a northerly; they are visible in places and shown on Navionics but barely on Garmin charts. Anchor only where you can see the bottom. noforeignland also lists a 'Sandy Point South' anchorage (holding good at 6:1 scope in 15-20 ft; nearby reefs cut the swell but it can roll) whose exact position could not be confirmed; it is probably this same Sandy Point area.
