Joulter Cays

25° 16.0′ N · 78° 7.0′ W

A chain of small, uninhabited, vegetated cays and vast oolitic sand shoals north of Andros; an Important Bird Area for the endangered piping plover and short-billed dowitcher and famous among fly fishermen for bonefish and permit.

Practical

Position from Wikipedia. Designated an Important Bird Area in 2012; the National Audubon Society and Bahamas National Trust worked to make the cays a national park around 2015 (Wikipedia; check current rules with BNT before fishing or landing). Blue land crabs (Cardisoma guanhumi) have been photographed on the cays (Wikimedia Commons, 2000). The flats dry or nearly dry at low water: explore by dinghy or kayak on a rising tide, and keep away from nesting and roosting shorebirds. No services and no verified yacht anchorage position in the sources used here.

Best for

Shorebirds, bonefish flats and empty sand

Season

Piping plovers are winter visitors
