Hogsty Reef wrecks and snorkel

21° 41.3′ N · 73° 49.3′ W · approximate

Rusting wrecks on the rim of the atoll - the 1963 Liberty ship Trebišnjica (ex-Richmond P. Hobson) on the north reef and the 120-ft Lady Eagle on the south - plus patch reefs, reef sharks and clear water.

Practical

Approximate coordinate near the ActiveCaptain lagoon anchorage, which reviewers place in front of the Liberty wreck; wreck positions themselves are not published in my sources. Wikipedia: Trebišnjica grounded 17 July 1963 and is broken and deteriorating; Lady Eagle (south reef) is in better shape with her name visible; the slaver Hannah was lost here in 1802. Fetch in Ketch (2024) also notes a large wooden wreck mostly buried on the north side of Northwest Cay. Much of the Liberty wreck stands out of water in shallow, partly dead reef - a 2021 crew found it less impressive than expected but enjoyed freediving patch reefs (30-40 ft) toward the south reef, shadowed by curious reef sharks. Go in calm conditions with a dinghy anchor and a lookout; do not enter wrecks.
