HMS Conqueror wreck (Rum Cay)

23° 38.5′ N · 74° 48.0′ W · approximate

The scattered remains of the 101-gun screw ship-of-the-line HMS Conqueror, which ran onto the reef at Rum Cay's southeast corner in 1861 - cannons, anchor chain, hawse pipes and propeller-shaft parts overgrown in a staghorn gully, now a Bahamas underwater museum.

Practical

Position from Wikipedia (23 deg 38'30"N, 74 deg 48'W); Sail Abacos gives 23.6333, -74.8417, about 2.3 nm west, so treat both as approximate and find the site with local help. About 30 ft deep, so long bottom times; nurse sharks rest under larger sections (Sail Abacos). The Tribune (2024) says she struck at Sumner Point, which protects Port Nelson, in December 1861 and all hands were saved. Protected historic wreck: look, don't take. Exposed reef - dive only in calm seas; dive trips have run from Sumner Point Marina.

Best for

A shallow, historic wreck dive or snorkel in calm weather
