Crooked Island wall dives

22° 50.1′ N · 74° 21.3′ W · approximate

Off Pittstown Point the reef drops into the Crooked Island Passage as one of the closest and shallowest walls in the region: the lip is about 33 ft deep and only some 200 yards off the beach, with a dive the lodge calls the Dungeons among its showpieces.

Practical

Position approximate: about 200 yards off the Pittstown Point beach west of the marina, per the lodge's description; locate the drop-off by depth sounder and water colour. No dive shop on the island noted in sources: bring your own gear, compressor or fills, and dive from your boat or dinghy with a surface watch; the Crooked Island Passage carries current along the wall. The lodge offers snorkelling straight off its beach. Nearest recompression is far away (Nassau), so dive conservatively. Sail Abacos' dive notes: the reef top slopes from about 4 ft to 45–50 ft before the drop, and the wall falls to about 3,600 ft in the passage; visibility usually over 100 ft and the face is mostly current-free. Expect Nassau grouper, hogfish, schooling snapper, jacks, Caribbean reef and nurse sharks, eagle rays, hawksbill and green turtles, and black coral. Most sites are unnamed; Advanced Open Water is the sensible minimum, and carry a surface marker. Best December–April in settled NE trades.
