Seahorse Shores snorkel (beached wreck, Landrail Point–Pitts Town)

22° 49.1′ N · 74° 20.7′ W · approximate

The best shore snorkel on Crooked Island: flat volcanic rock ledges along Seahorse Shores hide parrotfish, wrasse and reef fish a few feet from the waterline, with the richest patch about 150 ft (50 m) south of an abandoned wreck lying on the shore below Casuarina Pines Villas.

Practical

Position approximate: placed just off the middle of Seahorse Shores, the 1.75-mile beach between Landrail Point and Pitts Town, from the backpackandsnorkel description; the wreck on the beach is the mark, so swim the rocks 50 m south of it. A rock enclosure near a lone palm works at both high and low tide. Little current; tidal range is only about 3–4 ft. Land by dinghy from the Landrail Point or Pittstown anchorage in settled easterlies; the shore is exposed in westerly swell. Nurse sharks are seen occasionally. No-take rules: no spearfishing on scuba anywhere in the Bahamas.

Best for

Easy fish-filled shore snorkel from the Landrail Point anchorage

Season

Settled E–SE trades; avoid in W or NW swell
