Landrail Point Anchorage

22° 48.4′ N · 74° 20.4′ W

The open roadstead off the white beach on Crooked Island's northwest shoulder, between Landrail Point settlement and Pittstown Point, and the first or last stop for boats crossing the Crooked Island Passage to or from Long Island, the Turks and Caicos or Hispaniola. Sand among scattered coral, a short dinghy ride from the settlement and the Crooked Island Lodge and Marina.

Practical

Waterway Guide position N 22°48.378' W 074°20.450', 20-30 ft; its advice is to anchor north of Landrail Point, about halfway to Pittstown Point, off the white sand beach opposite the mid-beach group of casuarinas, reading your way in between coral patches. Holding rated fair (sand over rock) by Waterway Guide and very good in sand by noforeignland users, whose pin (N 22°49.226' W 074°20.730') is in about 2.5 m closer to Pittstown Point. Open and exposed north through southwest: comfortable in the prevailing E-SE trades but rolly once wind tops about 15 kn or a westerly swell runs, and untenable when a cold front clocks the wind west and north (move to French Wells or the marina). A government dock in the small-craft basin at Landrail Point can be used to take on fuel (Waterway Guide); the full-service fuel dock is at Crooked Island Marina about a mile north. Cell data reported good. Provisioning is thin: a small store in the settlement and orders through the marina's weekly mailboat list.

Best for

Staging for the Crooked Island Passage in settled easterlies

Season

Nov–May in E–SE trades; leave before a cold front
