Crooked Island and Acklins birding

22° 41.4′ N · 74° 17.1′ W · approximate

Mangroves, salt ponds and remote cays make Crooked Island and Acklins rewarding for birders: herons and egrets in the French Wells mangroves and Turtle Sound, and on Samana's Propeller Cay a seabird colony of brown noddies, bridled terns, frigatebirds, tricoloured herons, oystercatchers and white-crowned pigeons.

Practical

Position approximate (French Wells mangroves). Best at dawn and dusk from a drifting dinghy or kayak; give nesting colonies (Propeller Cay in spring and early summer) a wide berth and do not land on nesting cays. Bring binoculars, bug spray and water.

Best for

Dinghy birding in the mangroves and on remote cays

Season
