Columbus Monument trail and Columbus Harbour walk
23° 40.6′ N · 75° 20.5′ W · approximate
A rough 1.75-mile drive or walk out to Long Island's northern tip, ending in a steep climb to the Columbus and Lucayan monument with views to Rum Cay, and a sand-flat wander or snorkel in the protected bay below.
Practical
Position is the monument (OpenStreetMap node); the trail itself starts at the parking area at the road's end at the foot of the hill, so it is marked approx. Directions (Beaches of Long Island, 2018): heading north through Seymour's, pass the Galliot Cay turn-off and take the dirt road to the left as the highway bends right (signed in 2016 for the 'Kingdom' development); stay straight. The 1.75 miles of sand and hardpan are very rough in places and take 10 to 15 minutes by car. The path up is steep (about 1 in 3 along the railings) on loose sand and stone, so take care coming down; Stella Maris Resort reports a new staircase to the top. Cape Santa Maria says it is a 7-mile (11.5 km) round-trip bike ride from the resort. Below, the bay between Long Island and Newton Cay is good for kayaking and snorkelling, but the channel from the ocean has strong currents: about 3,300 ft across the flats or 4,700 ft swimming the channel to the main bay. No water or shade; go early in the morning.
Best for
