Columbus Monument (Long Island)
23° 40.6′ N · 75° 20.5′ W
A white monument on the cliffs of Long Island's north end, built by the Long Islanders Association to mark Columbus's arrival in October 1492. A staircase climbs to the top for a view over the flats, the Atlantic and Calabash Bay.
Practical
Position is the OpenStreetMap monument node. Cape Santa Maria Resort says a road built in 2019 improved access and that it is a 7-mile (11.5 km) round-trip bike ride from the resort; the site has picnic spots, private beaches, snorkelling, shelling and a natural 'lazy river'. Stella Maris Resort reports a new staircase to the top. Cruisers anchored off Calabash Bay North also reach it by dinghy via Hoosie Harbour and a walk past the Sunset Restaurant (go on a rising tide). Bring water and sun protection; there are no services at the monument.
Best for
Panoramic north-end view and a combined walk with lunch at the Sunset Restaurant
