Cape Santa Maria

23° 40.4′ N · 75° 20.8′ W

The low northern headland of Long Island, where the white beaches of Calabash Bay end in reef and Atlantic surf. It is the corner every boat bound from George Town for Calabash Bay, Conception or Rum Cay has to round.

Practical

Position is the OpenStreetMap cape node. Reached on foot from the north end of the Calabash Bay beaches or by dinghy in calm weather; the surf on the north side can be big, so land on the lee (west) beaches. The reef off the cape breaks in any northerly swell; give it a wide berth under sail (see the Cape Santa Maria passage entry). Bahamas.com places Columbus Point and its monument on this northern tip.

Best for

Walking the north beaches and watching the reef break at sunset

Season

Year-round; dramatic in N swell
