Snake Cay Anchorage (Sand Cay)

26° 27.1′ N · 77° 3.0′ W

The anchorage off the old sea wall at Snake Cay, mainly used as a base for one of the best dinghy and kayak trips in the Abacos - up the mangrove-lined Snake Cay creek and south behind the small cays.

Practical

Anchor mid-bay in about 8 ft. Protected roughly SE through NW (some reviewers say W-N best). Holding is the problem: several reports of thin sand over flat rock and marl with debris, needing multiple attempts; deeper pockets exist on the N side of the cut. Very strong current in the cut. Gets shallow quickly outside the scoured channel - not for drafts over about 3 ft except in the main bay. Not documented as a hurricane hole in any source found. The point has been used as a dump (smoke and no-see-ums on an offshore night breeze, 2013 report). Good fishing off the dock; flats behind attract bonefishermen. The creeks are part of East Abaco Creeks National Park (est. 2015); regulated fishing allowed. ActiveCaptain community reports date from 2011-2019, before Hurricane Dorian (Category 5, Sept 1, 2019) hit Abaco; re-check bottom, markers and businesses locally.
