Powell Cay Anchorage

26° 54.1′ N · 77° 29.1′ W

An uninhabited cay just across the Sea of Abaco from Coopers Town, with a wide arcing beach in front of a big, usually peaceful anchorage that has room for more boats than ever show up.

Practical

Waterway Guide position N 26° 54.095' W 077° 29.080', depth 8-11 ft; holding rated good in sand (2023 review), though one review found depths differing from the charts. Good protection from N and E; swell works in when the wind goes SE, and like every west-side Abaco anchorage it is open to the W/NW shift behind a cold front. About 2 nm across the Sea of Abaco to Coopers Town (Little Abaco) for fuel, groceries and the community clinic. No facilities, moorings or fees on the cay. A sunken barge in the NW corner of the anchorage is an easy snorkel for children (one 2022 account calls it an old sailboat wreck).

Best for

Quiet overnight on the way down from the Far North cays; beach, trail and shelling

Season

Nov–May; leave for Green Turtle's sounds ahead of a W/NW frontal shift
