Hurricane season (North Abaco)

26° 52.1′ N · 77° 30.5′ W · approximate

The far north of the Abacos lies in the path of Atlantic hurricanes. Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 storm, stalled over Abaco in September 2019 and left damage still visible across the region. There are almost no hurricane holes north of Green Turtle Cay.

Practical

Pinned at Cooper's Town as a regional marker. The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October (NOAA NHC). Dorian made landfall on Great Abaco on September 1, 2019 with 185 mph sustained winds; Abaco took 87% of the Bahamas' $3.4 billion in losses. Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne (2004) destroyed the Walker's Cay hotel and badly damaged the marina; Dorian damaged Spanish Cay's Wrecker's Bar, still closed. In this subregion, Hogstyle Harbour in the Carters Cays is a one-boat shoal-draft hole and the Grand Cay harbor has notoriously poor holding, so plan to be south, hauled out or back in Florida by August, and monitor the NHC daily. Many pre-2019 cruising notes describe businesses that may not have reopened. Map position is an approximate representative point for this entry (derived from the nearest settlement, dock or harbour named above), not a surveyed location.
