Moraine Cay West Anchorage
27° 2.2′ N · 77° 46.7′ W
An alternative anchorage off Moraine's west beach, calmer than the usual spot when the prevailing wind sends chop and swell into the main bay.
Practical
ActiveCaptain position (2018). From the west or north-west, go well around to the west for an easy, deep approach; from the south-east there are 5-6 ft shallows. Reviewers found Navionics and Explorer charts of little use here, though the phone version of Navionics showed a hard-bottom passage close to Moraine, between the island and a rock awash, with 5.5 ft at mid-tide. Anchor about 50 ft back from the beach: a hard bar crosses the whole bay about 100 ft out. You may drag a little before the anchor catches in sand. Pre-Dorian report.
