Allans-Pensacola Signing Tree and Atlantic trail

26° 59.3′ N · 77° 40.9′ W · approximate

A short marked trail from the harbor beach crosses the cay to the Atlantic side, where cruisers have hung boat names on signing trees for decades: carved boards, fenders and painted floats. Reviewers call it the nicest signing tree anywhere, and it is a must-do on a first visit.

Practical

Approximate pin on land just north-east of the anchorage, derived from reviewers' descriptions (the path starts near the north-east end of the anchorage); not surveyed. Land the dinghy at the 'Walmart parking' sign by the trailhead, where a quirky hut and trail map mark the start; follow the buoy markers to the signing trees, then on to the ocean beaches. A second path starts at the second beach from the north end. Bring your boat's own sign, bug spray (no-see-ums at dusk) and shoes. The remains of an old government installation mentioned in the guidebooks are reached by a trail from Pensacola's north bay. Pre-Dorian reports (2015-2019); the trees may have been damaged by Hurricane Dorian, so check.
