Pensacola North Anchorage

26° 58.7′ N · 77° 39.9′ W

An anchorage on the north side of Pensacola Cay, one of the few spots in the far north protected from the west and south, though it is open to ocean swell. A very nice beach lies straight ahead.

Practical

ActiveCaptain position. Protected west through south-east; open to the north and to ocean swell, and likely unsafe in north winds. From the Sea of Abaco, run along the south-east edge of Pensacola, passing between it and Big Hog Cay, avoiding obvious rocks and shallows; turn north-west and enter between the last two rocks and the tip of Allans Cay, veering east around the shallows due south of the entrance. Holding mixed: good in sand for some, but a Spade would not dig in and the Navionics depths on the east side were wrong (under 4 ft where 6 ft was charted, 2016). The bar in the middle sticks out farther east than charted. A trail from the head of the bay leads to the old government installation mentioned in the guidebooks; the head of the bay is shallow and buggy. Good BTC 4G. Pre-Dorian reports (2015-2016).
