Beach· Exuma Cays

East Beach, Highbourne Cay

24° 42.9′ N · 76° 48.9′ W · approximate

A long crescent of powdery sand on the Atlantic side backed by casuarinas, with real surf and almost never another footprint. One of eight beaches on the cay and the one worth the walk across the island.

Practical

Reach it by walking the island road/track from the marina (15-20 min) rather than by dinghy - the Sound side is exposed and landing is rarely safe. Shade under the casuarinas. Beaches in the Bahamas are public to the high-water mark, but Highbourne is a private cay: stay on marked tracks and be a good guest.

Best for

A long solitary beach walk and shelling
