Windward Boatbuilding Village

12° 31.0′ N · 61° 25.9′ W

Windward, on Carriacou's north-east coast, is where island shipwrights still build traditional wooden Carriacou sloops on the beach under the trees, a craft brought by Scottish settlers. Launch days bring the whole village down to the shore.

Practical

Coordinate is the OpenStreetMap 'Windward' village node. Wikipedia: a traditional boatbuilding culture in Windward, where many residents are of Scottish and Irish descent. The Superyacht Services Guide also names Harvey Vale (Tyrrel Bay) as a boatbuilding enclave. Budget Marine describes builders working 'on a beach, under a tree' and using the horizon to keep hulls level. Pure Grenada says visitors can see how the community comes together for a boat launch; ask the tourism office in Hillsborough whether a launch is coming up. The windward coast is lined with reef, so visit by road (a taxi from Hillsborough or Tyrrel Bay), not by yacht. Small piers at Windward are mapped on OpenStreetMap, but no yacht anchorage is described in the sources used.
