Petit Carenage Mangroves and Bird Sanctuary (High North)

12° 31.4′ N · 61° 25.8′ W · approximate

A red-mangrove forest and lagoon behind Petit Carenage beach on Carriacou's north-east tip. KIDO calls it a bird sanctuary and counts migratory and resident birds here, and a marked trail runs through it to the turtle-nesting beach.

Practical

Coordinate is approx: the centroid of the OpenStreetMap wetland polygon behind Petit Carenage Beach. It lies within the proposed High North National Park and Protected Seascape, which, per KIDO's report, holds most of Carriacou's threatened habitats: forested coastal mangroves, littoral sand beaches, seagrass beds and near-shore reefs. KIDO programmes count and identify migratory and resident birds here and at Dover Big Pond, and run red-mangrove restoration planting (Rufford). Trained nature guides lead hikes on the High North trails and in the Petit Carenage mangroves (KIDO 2013 report). Isle of Reefs Tours (L'Esterre, 473-404-0415) has advertised guided kayaking and bird-watching (carriacou.biz). Access: a marked trail from the road in Windward through the mangroves to the beach (carriacou.biz), or on foot beyond Gun Point via L'Appelle (Caribbean Beat). It is a road-trip outing, not a dinghy landing. Bring insect repellent; sandflies and mosquitoes are worst at dawn and dusk.
