High North National Park Forest and Wildlife

12° 30.5′ N · 61° 26.4′ W

Carriacou's least-disturbed corner: about 200 hectares of upland dry forest rising to High North Peak (956 ft), with teak and mahogany stands, iguanas and good birding. Shady trails drop down to Anse La Roche.

Practical

Coordinate is the park reference point that KIDO gives in its Rufford report (N 12°30.45', W 61°26.45'), which falls on the High North summit ridge. KIDO describes the proposed High North National Park and Protected Seascape as a 200-hectare contiguous upland forest with the island's highest peak, forested coastal mangroves, several littoral coral sand beaches, seagrass beds and near-shore reefs. Carriacou.biz says the park spans the island's full range of ecosystems, is its most undisturbed area, and has a network of hiking trails, a teak and mahogany forest, plantation ruins and windmills, and wildlife including iguanas. Dive Carriacou calls High North great for bird-watchers and nature lovers. The High North Nature Trail skirts the park with views down the west coast (Caribbean Beat). See the separate High North Peak Hike and Anse La Roche Beach and Trail entries for routes. Start early: the dry forest is hot by late morning, so carry water.
