Tobago Cays Anchorage (Petit Rameau - Petit Bateau channel)

12° 38.1′ N · 61° 21.6′ W · approximate

The narrow cut between Petit Rameau and Petit Bateau, the most sheltered anchoring spot in the Cays: sand bottom, palm-fringed islets on both sides and the reef-broken Atlantic horizon to the east.

Practical

Coordinate is derived: the middle of the water channel between the two islets on OpenStreetMap's coastline; Doyle's approach waypoint is 0.1 nm west of Petit Rameau (12.6367, -61.3633). Strong current runs through the cut and changes with the tide, so Noonsite advises bow and stern anchors (one cruiser reported great holding in 3 m) and Doyle recommends taking a mooring instead. Anchoring is also allowed just west of Petit Rameau, north or south of Baradal, and between Baradal and the other cays; shallow-draft boats can go east of Baradal. Do not anchor on reef or seagrass, between the moorings and the turtle area, or anywhere at Petit Tabac. Anchoring costs the same as a mooring: EC$60 per night (from Jan 1, 2023; confirmed by Doyle 2025) plus EC$15 per person park fee (2023 schedule; verify locally). The whole anchorage is open to the full force of the trade winds - expect a windy, bouncy night. Security: boardings and thefts have happened, especially off-season; anchor near other boats and lock up.
